Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury Wins Again!

Press Release | 24 August 2004

August 2004 has seen another great achievement for Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury as winner of 2 Edmund Wright Heritage Awards. The hotel was named winner of the Minister’s Award for Outstanding Contribution and Heritage Places (non-residential) for Adaptive Reuse.

The Judges commented that the Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury project demonstrated a superior conservation result that optimised the potential afforded by this site. It was agreed that the property is an excellent example of adaptive reuse, with a high level of commercial viability balanced with heritage qualities, that should be widely promoted as a bench-mark for other such projects.

On April 15th, this year the Hon. John Hill MP, South Australian Minister for Heritage and Conservation, unveiled the Award of Merit for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.

Mr Richard A. Engelhardt, Regional Advisor for Culture in the Asia Pacific said, “Medina’s sophisticated conversion of the historic Adelaide Treasury building into a high-end hotel complex successfully demonstrates the commercial viability of re-using historic building stock”.

Just a few days later on April 19th, the property was awarded “Serviced Apartment Property of the Year”, at the prestigious Hotel Management Awards.

Opened in late 2002, Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury - Medina's first property for the South Australian capital – was named in the prestigious Condé Nast Traveler USA “Hot List” of the top 80 best new hotels in the world for 2003.

Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury is the only Australian hotel to be listed in the Urban Hotel category and was one of several hundred new hotels around the world to be visited anonymously by Conde Nast judges. Properties that were chosen cover 35 countries & 6 continents.

Centrally located on Victoria Square in the historic former Treasury Building, Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury has brought, a 21st Century luxury apartment hotel vision into a 19th Century heritage building.

Restored at a cost of $20 million, the project to create a five star complex combined original elements of the 163 year old Treasury with modern finishes and amenities, including 80 one and two bedroom serviced apartments and studio rooms.

In recognition of the superb renovation of the building, the hotel has also won the Professional Excellence Award for its builder Multiplex at the Australian Institute of Building Awards. (May 03).

Medina’s architects and interior designers, in tandem with Multiplex, created generous, open plan apartments and public spaces, with elements of the original 19th Century ambience including limestone walls, archways and cast iron columns.

Other aspects of the original building’s heritage include the original State Cabinet Room, preserved as a meeting room to attract conference business to Adelaide as well as restored
underground tunnels.

Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury also offers guests a superb modern Australian restaurant and bar, situated around a delightful central courtyard with fountain. Other features include spacious public areas, as well as lifestyle facilities such as swimming pool, fully equipped gym, sauna and spa.

Medina has 20 properties nationally with the brand new Medina Grand Perth having just opened in WA.
