2. Taronga Zoo: spectacularly sited zoo with terrific views of the city skyline. A range of specialist tours and Sky Safari cable car as well as all the usual animal exhibits. Ferries depart Circular Quay, every quarter past and quarter to the hour. Open daily, 9am-5pm. Adults: $32, kids $17.50.

5. Harbour Jet: wet and wild: if your idea of seeing the sights includes a good dose of thrills and a guarantee of getting wet, then Harbour Jet is definitely the thing to do on Sydney Harbour. The jet boats offer a range of trips, from 35-minute ‘jet blasts’ to 80-minute ‘Middle Harbour Adventures’. Tours start at $60 per adult, $40 for kids. Family tickets are available. 6. James Craig: cruise the harbour on an authentic, working, tall-masted, sailing ship. The 19th century three-masted iron barque, James Craig, sails every second Saturday. Quarantine Station Ghost Tour: Sydney Quarantine Station, built in 1832 on North Head near Manly, was the first point of arrival for immigrants until 1984, and sadly, for the sick and those dying of diseases such as smallpox and TB, it was their last. Every Friday at 6pm there is a two-hour ghost tour for kids where children aged 6-12 can help the rangers hunt down the legendary ghosts of the Quarantine Station, listening to tales of our resident ghosts and getting spooked by creatures that go bump in the night.
